The new film is based on the hugely successful debut novel of the same name by Ernest Kline.
Steven Spielberg has entered the world of virtual reality gaming, or at least his new film has. The trailer for Ready Player One is now out online and it looks like a insane playground of pop culture for one of Hollywood's most celebrated auteurs to sink his teeth into.
Ready Player One follows Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan), a teenager who lives in a 2044 dystopia. Wade's only hope to escape poverty is to find an Easter egg in a virtual reality game, the discovery of which will lead him to inherit a valuable fortune in a world torn by an energy crisis.
As you might expect, the trailer is pretty much a-balls-to-the-wall extravaganza of kaleidoscopic destruction. There's also appearances of some beloved fictional characters, including the imposing looking automaton from The Iron Giant (so I guess this will be something a catharsis for those who are fans of that film but not of its conclusion).
