Whatever
Whatever will probably bring Curtis Jones the mainstream exposure he has deserved since day one, but you get the feeling that it would have sounded great as an EP rather than a long player.
The first few tracks sound like Cajmere/Green Velvet at the height of his powers; ‘Genedefekt’ explores mock Germanic electro, ‘Sleepwalking’ and ‘When’ are pulsating electronic grooves and ‘Stranj’ outdoes the likes of Beyer and Smith in the dark techno stakes.
Unfortunately after these peaks Whatever hits rock bottom, with Cajmere devoting a series of frenzied, punk influenced techno workouts to the ills of society as well as his clearly disturbed private life. If he had re-directed this angst to the musical direction of Whatever, we’d be talking about a classic work.
