A treasure trove of psych-pop beats
Swede Eric Berglund has been caused quite a buzz online with ‘Come With Me’, the teaser single from White Magic. Boasting an awesome Kubrick-esque video from the supremely talented Marcus Soderlund (check out his similarly ace vid for The xx’s ‘VCR’), the song is the perfect primer for the ceo aesthetic – dancefloor friendly electro-pop with an ‘80s sheen. Think Ariel Pink with hit single potential.
It remains to be seen if ceo is more than a one-trick pony a la CSS (remember them?), but taken on its own terms, White Magic is pretty hard to argue with – the likes of ‘Illuminata’ and ‘Oh God Dear’ are built around powerhouse grooves that seduce the listener with ease. There is also a noticeably psychedelic aspect to ceo’s aesthetic as well; the singer takes catchy melodies and smears them with spacey ambience, in a manner reminiscent of Animal Collective.
Conclusion – the man from psych-pop heaven, he say yes.
