WineMom fill us in on their excellent new single, ‘A Roll Of Honour’.
What are the inspirations behind your sound?
Millie: I listen to a lot of funk and Matthew brings a jazz influence. When you put it all together, it gives the songs a lot of energy.
Reese: It’s a very nostalgic pop-rock sort of sound.
Rosanna: When I write, there’s a general spirit to the song. I’ll come up with little bits of instrumentation, but not a lot. It’s more interesting when we all come in together.
Matthew: It’s the process of making all these different influences work that informs the sound as a whole. You have to compromise in certain areas and it’s actually pretty cool.

How was the process of putting out your first two singles?
Rosanna: With ‘Blood Moon’, we didn’t really know what we were doing. I just wanted it to be big, like a wall of sound. With ‘Neptune's Seas', we were trying to strip it back. But our next track, ‘A Roll Of Honour’, is definitely a cousin of ‘Blood Moon’ – it’s a massive rock song.
Millie: When we put out ‘Blood Moon’, we had only about 300 followers. We just wanted an opening statement.
Matthew: I only came for the second day of recording, and I was like, ‘What’s going on?’ There were around 20 vocal tracks and Millie was setting up a cello. It was like, ‘This is not how we play this live!’
Reese: In the middle of it, we went, ‘Let’s add cello!’ Millie had to improvise cello lines – and to be honest, it makes the entire song.
