Brilliantly ambitious debut from Cork duo.
Dreamy electro-pop has become ubiquitous of late; a boy-girl duo peddling same is nothing short of a musical staple. It takes something special to stand out from the crowd. Young Wonder have found it.
The Cork outfit took plenty of time in crafting their first full-length release, and it shows. That’s not to say it’s all bells and whistles – in fact, Birth is often a model of efficiency – but there’s a precocious intelligence and engagement in evidence that raises the record from the throng producing ostensibly similar fare.
An ear for an unorthodox, exotic sound – as heard on ‘To You’ or ‘St Verena’ – and the expanse showcased on the Sacred Animals-assisted ‘Time’ serve a dual purpose: exploring less chartered territory, and giving Rachel Koeman’s vocals the space they deserve, rather than being relegated to the usual celestial chirping. Delivering songs that are lyrically substantial throughout, the pair are clearly not the type to paint by numbers.
Perhaps that’s why recent single ‘Sweet Dreaming’ gives cause for concern. It’s an impressive, radio-friendly pop song, but that’s the point; Young Wonder have shown themselves capable of producing something more. This could be the start of an intriguing journey – but to go all the way, Young Wonder must trust their ability to forge their own path.
