In the week since Gareth Quinn Redmond and YURN first shared their second collaborative project, Life's Slow Build, it seems the world has descended further into madness. Released on the first day of 2021, the EP is overarched by forward movement, hope, and optimism – but perhaps 'Tum', the EP's most ominous track, reflects the ethos of the start of the year better than both of them could have predicted.
'Tum' begins and ends with a distinct air of suspense. Compact percussion and tight synths dominate the track, before the simple piano is overshadowed by dark strings. "After a 3 day recording experiment in January of last year, getting to know each other’s influences and tastes having never worked together before, elements were chopped and resampled, moved and stitched together to form the base of the song," says YURN of the duo's process. "'Tum' began as a short sample from one of Gareth’s many synthesisers, and over the course of a couple zoom sessions it evolved into a ten minute journey which we split in two."
Doni Irawan, a young filmmaker from Thailand, reflects the sonic landscape in his stirring, cinematic video: a chase, a looming, masked force from which escape is necessary for survival. "He created the video in record time, exceeding all our expectations," YURN adds.
