Going into Yacht Rock 2, I have to admit that I wasn't expecting much. Sure, the first installment of YR was a terrific offering - but who needs Part 2 six years later?

I was prepared for a collection of forgettable beachy rap tunes. Instead, what we have is a surprisingly compelling record, chock-full of interesting jazz detours and special guests, that comfortably eclipses the original effort. It'll come as no great revelation that Yacht Rock 2 evokes the lavish lifestyle associated with The Alchemist's native Beverly Hills. It kicks off with 'Exclusive Vibe', the languid feel of which nicely sets the tone for the album. Smooth jazz horns creep in over a funky bass line - it's like modern muzak, but in a good way - and listeners are instantly transported to The Alchemist's sunkissed world. The album boasts a number of complex and hypnotic tracks, and throughout, lounge piano and laidback brass are offset by hilarious verses from the likes of Big Twins and Big Body Bes.

The most high-profile guest is Action Bronson, who makes a peppy contribution to 'Tropical Storm Lenny' - an enormousrly entertaining, fun track. The mixing and production are superb throughout, with the meticulously crafted arrangements proving hugely impressive. For someone who is often frustrated by the formulaic nature of hip-hop instrumentals these days, Yacht Rock 2 is a breath of fresh air. Indeed, as well as satisfying his fans, it should win The Alchemist a plethora of new converts.
