MODERN TAKE ON NEW WAVE FROM KILLERS GUITARIST
Fifteen years after The Killers’ classic debut Hot Fuss, guitarist Dave Keuning has now launched a new project, in the shape of his solo debut Prismism. Saturated with dreamlike electronic beats and glittering guitar riffs, Keuning’s 14-track effort triumphantly re-imagines the golden age of ‘80s synth-pop.
Honing the timeless sound that has distinguished much of The Killers’ output, Keuning crafts songs that could easily soundtrack any coming-of-age film. Thematically focused on the angst and romance accompanying young love and relationships, Prismism beautifully captures the spirit of youthful affection. The album’s lead single, ‘Boat Accident’, is emblematic of the record as a whole. With a vintage new wave feel and catchy lyrics, it is Keuning at his best.
Other standout moments include the piercing lyrics of ‘If You Say So’ (“I fought a war that I can’t win at all”) and the sugar-rush refrain of ‘Gimme Your Heart’ (“I will take whatever you give me/ Even though I want it all”). Initially, the title track’s heavily auto-tuned vocals are jarring, though as the track progresses, it proves an effective electro-pop workout.

Experimental at times and unsurprisingly reminiscent of The Killers at others, Prismism makes for an impressive opening to Keuning’s solo account.
