Nostalgia-rich eighth album from Cork maestro.
Soaring strings and ethereal vocals suffuse this sophisticated 10-track effort from John Blek. In addition, the elegiac alt-folk collection is further elevated by inspired guest vocals from Cathy Davey, along with delicate keys and a host of imaginative qualities.
A swell of beats leads ‘Raven’s Cry’, with raspy vocals creating an uneasy yet irresistible tone, alongside sublime strings and stunning backing vocals. ‘Once In A While’ offers an exquisite moment of laidback listening, before ‘Half-Life’ once again raises the tempo.
‘Lyric & Air’ brings Davey’s vocals into full focus, making for a gorgeously sweet duet. Standout number ‘Come Undone’, meanwhile, blends keys, strings and spine-tingling vocals: the effect is mesmerising. The closing ‘Floating Aimlessly’ highlights the bewitching qualities of Blek’s voice. It’s a satisfying finale to an impressive offering.
