Excellent debut from rising indie star.
Remarkably, given the well-established standing of Cian Godfrey, aka Somebody’s Child, in Irish rock circles, this self-titled release marks the singer-songwriter’s debut LP.
We already knew how talented this boy is but it gets better. The album boasts a distinctive modern sound, that’s at once steeped in the influences of his Parisian childhood and yet unmistakably Irish in spirit. Godfrey has clearly developed eclectic tastes throughout his multi-cultural life.
There is a real richness to the record. It fluctuates compellingly between upbeat, drum-driven tracks (‘I Need Ya’); quieter moments of introspection (‘Hold Me Like You Wanna’); and deeply satisfying, guitar-heavy offerings (‘Sell Out’). Throw in Cian’s superb vocals, and for anyone with a devout love of rock and pop-punk, Somebody’s Child hits the sweet spot.
Across eleven excellent tracks, this debut showcases Godfrey’s impressive musicality and songwriting finesse. The stand-out numbers include ‘Broken Record’, ‘What I Said’ and ‘We Could Start A War’. But there is never a dull moment. This is a wonderfully accomplished first offering.
