Boz Mugabe’s thrilling new graphic novel SCORNWOOD explores religion, cruelty and all-things horror.
The story follows three childhood friends growing up in an extremely Christian community.
“The sky outside the kitchen window was always full of crucifixes," reads the first line of the book. The gloomy art style makes each crucifix appear haunted and foreboding, setting the tone for the rest of the story.
The children make a plan to travel into the forbidden forest known as Scornwood. The last known man to enter came back in pieces, but the three are determined to investigate the mysterious place. This adventure unravels a series of events that changes them forever, facing off against unfamiliar creatures, cruel nuns and wretched caretakers.
The art style of each page is chilling and ominous, utilising intense detail to create a frightening atmosphere. One could spend an hour absorbing each drawing, lost in the intricacies.
