The Booker Prize judges described Wild Houses as "a darkly comic account of frustration and misadventure in a small Irish town"
The longlist for the Booker Prize 2024 has been revealed, with Mayo-raised writer Colin Barrett featured among the nominees, for his debut novel Wild Houses.
Barrett previously published the short story collections Young Skins in 2013 and Homesickness in 2022 – the former featuring 'Calm With Horses', which has since been adapted into a film starring Cosmo Jarvis, Barry Keoghan and Niamh Algar.
The Booker Prize longlist of 13 books was selected by a judging panel chaired by artist and author Edmund de Waal, along with Sara Collins, Justine Jordan, Yiyun Li, and Nitin Sawhney.
The judges described Wild Houses as "a darkly comic account of frustration and misadventure in a small Irish town" – as well as a "slow-burn study of character and fate that’s also an edge-of-your-seat thriller."
Their selection was made from 156 books, published between October 1 2023 and September 30 2024.

The Booker Prize is widely considered to be the world’s most influential prize for a single work of fiction – and is open to works of long-form fiction by writers of any nationality, written in English and published in the UK and/or Ireland.
The shortlist of six books will be announced on September 16. The shortlisted authors each receive £2,500, and a specially bound edition of their book.
The overall winner of the Booker Prize 2024 will be announced at a ceremony in London on November 12. The winning author will receive £50,000 – as well as the international recognition and boost in sales that comes with the honour.
Last year's winner was Irish author Paul Lynch, for his fifth novel, Prophet Song.
