Andrew Hozier-Byrne is a strong supporter of the Repeal the Eighth campaign, a campaign in support of reproductive rights for Ireland's women. The goal of the campaign is to repeal the Eighth Amendment, which guarantees right to life for the unborn and came into law in 1983. In an interview with i News, he has stated that “The Eighth amendment has been condemned by the UN and Amnesty International as degrading and cruel so I’m very happy to take part in that democratic process at home and show support for it.” The singer-songwriter was joined by actor Cillian Murphy in a March for Choice this September. The march was successful in its goal of promoting global awareness for the Repeal the Eighth campaign.
On Saturday, there will be a citizen's assembly here in Dublin hosted by Prime Minister Edna Kenny to consider whether the restrictions on reproductive rights should be repealed. Hozier seems confident that the people of Ireland are ready for the change, as he said, “Recent polls have shown 70% in favour of repealing the Eighth Amendment so it’s a conversation that needs to be had.”
