The mass trial concluded today.
Imprisoned Dubliner Ibrahim Halawa is expected to receive his verdict next Monday.
The court in Cairo, Egypt indicated that the mass trial – Halawa is being tried along with hundreds of other prisoners – had concluded, and that the outcome will be known on August 28.
A 45-minute meeting took place in Cairo last month between Egyptian President Abdel Fateh el-Sisi and an eight-member Oireachtas delegation, at which el-Sisi reportedly gave Irish politicians the “clear impression” that he will grant Halawa clemency when the trial is finished.
There is therefore a possibility that the Firhouse man could be back home in September.
The 21-year-old has been held in prison for over four years, with his trial being adjourned 28 times.

He was arrested at the age of 17 during demonstrations against the ousting of President Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood by the Egyptian military in August 2013.
He has been charged with attempted murder, though Amnesty International researchers in Egypt have claimed that Halawa was in the al-Fath mosque during the alleged offences and could not have committed them.
The news of Halawa’s verdict has prompted comment via Twitter, seen below:
