The Guinness Storehouse Summer programme ‘Lovely Day For a Visit’ recently announced headline performances by Kelis and BICEP this summer, with the latter DJ duo serving up a thrilling set last night.
The 360 degree views of Dublin city from The Gravity Bar on the seventh floor of The Guinness Storehouse are about as magical as it gets when it comes to admiring our capital's charm. Imagine pairing the beautiful views with some bass-thumping tunes for an unforgettable night of quality music and creamy pints, and that's a rough snapshot of what last night's anticipated 'Lovely Day For a Visit' event brought to the ecstatic audience.
Hot on the heels of Dermot Kennedy’s recent performance, the first of its kind on the roof of the Guinness Storehouse, on June 21st; American superstar Kelis and Belfast electronic pairing BICEP are continuing the series in style. The ticketed live music show took place in the heart of the Liberties in Dublin 8 - what better location to curate euphoria through intense bass drops, glimmering light shows and another mesmerising Fatti Burke art installation?
Heading up the many flights of stairs and escalators, the excitement was electric. Getting your hands on BICEP tickets, which sold out in minutes, was a feat in itself, but the reward was undeniable. As gig-goers walked through the historic Guinness Storehouse after-hours, the famous gate to the brewery and lobby area (home to the infamous 1000-year lease) was transformed into a gorgeous park area by the aforementioned illustrator.
Burke's 'Lovely Day For A Guinness' t-shirts have been seen on the likes of Lewis Capaldi, so it's no wonder the company continue to approach her for colourful, vibrant work. With a blue park bench, iconic yellow harp and even a painted piano for playing, the road upwards to the Gravity Bar was paved with luscious props and eye-catching visual art by designer Cyan Ryan.

As the sun blazed through the windows of the stunning dual bar space on the top floor, Dublin-based DJ and selector EMA got the crowd more-than-sufficiently warmed up with a dazzling selection of hard-hitting basslines. EMA runs the Woozy label and club night, and is also the co-founder of Dublin based collective Skin&Blister, a platform curated to nurture and encourage female, trans and non-binary creatives in the realm of music and the arts.
The DJ's eclectic selections are much indebted to her love of UK soundsystem culture, which has taken her to Berlin, Manchester, Liverpool, London, Dingle and Leipzig. Woozy's latest Rinse show featured special guest Rob Rua. EMA delves into dub-heavy sounds ahead of BICEP's ascension to the stage, showing off her emphasis on low-end frequencies. Looking around the room, it's slowly but surely filling up as her basslines reverberate around your chest.
At 9:30pm, Belfast-born house producers Matt McBriar and Andy Ferguson (aka BICEP) switch with EMA on decks, and the crowd are absolutely feral. Having sold out Dublin’s 3Arena for their epic St. Patrick’s Day show earlier this year, BICEP have built a global reputation as one of the biggest names in underground and mainstream dance music with an avid following worldwide.
“We’ve never done a show like this before, so the chance to curate this one-off DJ show in Dublin at the Home of Guinness for our Irish fans is really exciting," the pair said at the time of the Guinness Storehouse's 'Lovely Day For A Visit' announcement. It certainly feels like a once in a lifetime set from an audience member's perspective, as the intense strobe lights and hypnotic, sleek graphics sweep around the room.

Anyone who has had the change to witness BICEP perform headline festival sets will be aware of their usual rainbow light shows and visuals that only enhance the experience of their music, and their Guinness Storehouse set is no different. Effortlessly blending one song into the next, the duo were loving every moment of the intimate show, with delighted shouts of encouragement from the crowd at every beat drop.
Of course, when the instantly recognisable sound of 'Glue' began, the bustling Gravity Bar lost the plot entirely. Shirts were taken off, electrifying lights panned the room and the cheers were deafening, as the DJs of BICEP smiled upon the revellers. The Northern Irish duo’s dynamic stage show was one of the summer’s most impressive festival sets last year, and their Paddy's Day performance cemented their live status further (somehow).
Cuts from their second album, 2021’s Isles, are blared throughout the audio-visual masterpiece of a live show last night, with their legendary flexed bicep logo still the show’s focal point. Striking colours and stadium-filling lasers forge a beautiful sight in the room, with dry ice piping into the room for more atmosphere.
They effortlessly glided from one electronic genre to another, all the while blending their songs together with synthetic swirls and gushing beats. 'Apricots' was a predictable standout, as lifted from the well-worn world music classic Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares and its vocal from a Malawian compilation. After paying rights holders, BICEP donated to a Malawian orphanage - given the slim likelihood of the money reaching the original performers themselves.

The Clara La San-featured 'Water' gets one of the best reactions from the audience, deservedly so. There's otherworldly but noticeable traces of Floating Points, DJ Heartstring, Joy Orbison and Overmono in their slickly-delivered set, which somehow transcends from two guys hovering over synths into something enthralling. Perfect pints are simply the cherry on top, while a jaw-dropping orange sunset appears in the background of the Dublin skyline leads to phones immediately whipped out in a frenzy to snap the Instagram-able moment.
The performance felt like a communal moment, frozen in time in one of the city's most stunning locations - on top of the world, with a creamy pint in your hand. What could be better?
We'll wait and see what 'Milkshake' icon Kelis brings to the Gravity Bar - but for now, the crown is firmly nestled on BICEP's heads. They aren't resting on their laurels anytime soon.
‘A Lovely Day for a Visit’ at the Guinness Storehouse will run from Wednesday 7th June 2023, and is open daily from 10am. The exhibition is included in each experience ticket, which starts at €26. The Guinness Storehouse is open seven days a week, with everything included in the ticket price.
