NIALL STANAGE on an imaginative musical initiative to help the homeless.
Homelessness in Dublin is an ever-growing problem, particularly among young people. There are, however, organisations which try to help. One of the most effective is Focus Ireland, established over a decade ago by Sr Stanislaus Kennedy, which offers a wide range of services to homeless people.
In November 1999 they opened a new drop-in centre, The Loft , which is geared to the needs of some of the youngest members of the homeless population. The centre is open from 10.30 am -7.30pm seven days a week, and represents a place of safety, while also offering meals and showering and laundry facilities.
Though it is essential that these basic needs be met, they go only part of the way towards addressing the difficulties which underlie homelessness.
Caroline Hickson, Fundraising Manager of The Loft points out that many of the people who come to us would be from very unstable backgrounds there would often be a history of family break-up, for example. Whatever their specific background is, they would almost universally lack structure in their lives.
The Focus Ireland workers at The Loft attempt to address these issues by offering a variety of activities whether cultural, sporting or artistic. And it is here that music comes in. The young people who come to The Loft are keen musicians. Their problem is that instruments and equipment are in short supply.
As a result, The Loft are seeking donations of anything and everything from DJing equipment to bodhrans, from guitars to bongos.
Such donations would not only assist in The Loft s stated aim of meeting young people where they re at ; it would also help those who have had to battle homelessness fulfil their potential and boost their creative energies.
