As most of the world stayed up late watching the dramatic US presidential election count unfold, the First Lady Michelle Obama has now revealed that she was tucked up in her White House bed fast asleep!
“I went to bed. I don’t like to watch the political discourse; I never have,” Michelle Obama reveals in a new joint interview with her husband for the cover story of the latest edition of People magazine.
She adds that it was “easy” to go to bed early because she took the philosophical approach that the result was out of their hands once all the votes had been cast. “Once you do what you can do, then the rest is easy. It was in the hands of the American people,” she explains.
But going to bed early on election night is nothing new for Michelle Obama – for surprisingly, the outgoing First Lady, who vocally championed Hillary Clinton during the bitter election, also reveals that she would rarely bother to stay up late to watch the count during any of the her husband’s elections either. “I barely did with him!” she adds during the insightful interview.
However, Michelle Obama says she has no regrets about her anti-Republican mantra: “When they go low, we go high,” which she declared during Democratic National Convention in July. “Anything that I felt about the election I said and I stand by,” she maintains.
However, even though she doesn’t see eye-to-eye with Donald Trump, Michelle Obama says the President-elect should and will be treated with respect by her husband’s outgoing administration.
"This is our democracy, and this is how it works. We are ready to work with the next administration and make sure they are as successful as they can be. Because that’s what’s best for this country,” she says.
