Nobody could accuse Waterford-bred O Emperor of flooding the market. They've concluded their 15 years together with Jason, which is only their third album. The record is a terrific high for the five-piece to go out on; it's experimental and adventurous, while always remaining accessible. Most of the tracks have a distinctly live feel, though many were knitted together from rambling improvs to capture a consistent mood of innovation. While there are hints of Floyd, Hendrix and Radiohead, there are also more esoteric influences like Orchestra Baobab. 'The Right Thing To Do' is simultaneously laidback and funky, awash with snappy beats and snazzy frills. 'Effort' is a beguiling blues workout, and 'Girl' has some impressive, Ray Manzarek-style keyboards. Elsewhere, 'Richard's Dream' boasts tub-thumping drums and zinging guitar; 'New Fish Tank' has an infectious energy'; and 'Bogey Wonderland' swings mightily, courtesy of see-sawing vocals. Yes, O Emperor get a little weird at times, but it's a purposeful and controlled weirdness that makes Jason a very rewarding listen.
