PBP wrote to Sinn Féin “seeking discussions around a Left Front”
People Before Profit (PBP) are seeking to explore a left-wing alliance with Sinn Féin ahead of next election, as was recently done in France.
On Sunday, the French New Popular Front left alliance came out as the shock winners in the second round of voting in the legislative elections, blocking the far-right from accessing Government.
In an open letter to Sinn Féin’s Mary Lou McDonald, PBP wrote that the “lesson from France is that a Left Front, united around radical demands, could win at the next general election in Ireland.”
However, they added that Sinn Féin's "reluctance to clearly oppose the government’s scapegoating of asylum seekers was a mistake."
With the recent election results in France, where the French left united around radical demands and came out on top, People Before Profit have written to Sinn Féin to seek discussions around a Left Front going into the next General Election.

They also said that the recent local and European elections that Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael will be returned to government, and that the two parties "may very well rush" the general election forward for the purpose of defeating Sinn Féin.
“People’s disappointments and cynicism about politics,” they continued, “a big part of that comes from the fact that in the past, they’re voting for change, for example, for the Greens or Labour Party, and their votes have ended up putting Fianna Fáil or Fine Gael back in power.”
“The growth of the far right is directly linked to the housing crisis, the crises in other vital public services and the neglect of many working class communities.
“We think this can be reversed if the left unites and embarks on a policy of grass-roots campaigning and people power mobilisations, just as we did with the water charges. Such mobilisation, we think, can have a positive impact.
“When large numbers of people move beyond despair and despondency and into activism on the issues that will actually make a difference, they are more likely to raise their aspirations for real change. In this situation, all parties of the left can gain.”
