Californian drummer, percussionist, composer and keyboardist Joachim Cooder gave a mesmerizing display last night at Cyprus Avenue, Cork City. The multi-instrumentalist set featured tunes from his 2020 release, Over That Road I’m Bound. Though known as a percussionist, his mastery of electric mbira (a variation on the African thumb piano) which produces a unique thrilling sound had the Leeside audience transfixed. That mastery was enhanced by Rayna Gellert’s lovely violin play.
During the show, Joachim mentioned his connection to Ireland being more than just music. He touched on the subject of his Dad's ancestors being Irish with the surname of O'Leary. And with a smile on his face, he said, "I've been informed that O'Leary is a Cork name." At this time a shout came from the audience... "Hello, cousin. My name is Valerie O'Leary. And with a wry smile, Joachim quickly answered "Don't go anywhere after the show Valerie, we have a lot of catching up to do."

Support on the night and throughout Joachim's Irish tour was from Co.Down singer/songwriter Taylor Lally.
