Sometimes a singer comes to the fore with a talent so evident, it’s impossible to ignore. This is the case with 22-year-old Clodagh O’Sullivan.
Clodagh started her musical career as a vocal coach and backing singer, but she's quickly moving into the spotlight with the impending release of her debut EP, In All of Your Glory. Today, Hot Press is premiering the music video for the second single off the EP, 'Roots'.
The 'Roots' video features her walking through the forest in a series of inquisitive shots in greys and greens. Written herself, the song weaves unexpected harmonies throughout the chorus, showcasing Clodagh's musical intelligence.
Those harmonic layers are a deliberate mark of her sound, says the Cork singer.
“I love pop-leaning, vocally-led music,” says Clodagh. “My first band, The Contradictions, was just four female vocalists with harmonies and it really worked. When I make music now, I still like to record backing vocals and layer them up to replicate that sound.”
In addition to studying at BIMM Dublin, Clodagh has trained under multi-talented vocal coaches Gemma Sugrue (RTÉ Concert Orchestra, Chic, Billy Ocean, Jerry Fish, Lee Fields) and Chris Johnson (The Naked Vocalist).
Earlier this summer, she was selected to do a residency at Attica Audio, as part of Donegal Arts Festival, with producers Tommy McLaughlin (Villagers, Soak, In Their Thousands, Ailbhe Reddy) and Rocky O’Reilly (Gary Lightbody, And So I Watch You From Afar, The Wood Burning Savages). Clodagh also spent time this summer in Izola, Slovenia undertaking a jazz course with Emilia Martensson, where she made music with Emilia and her sister Marina (from the band Laibach) and Femi Temowo (guitarist for Amy Winehouse).
