Leah Sohotra's whimsical 'Mountain Song' is accompanied by a mystical and vibrant stop-motion video from artist Bianca Stone.
Leah Sohotra takes us on an entrancing folk journey with ‘Mountain Song’, off her debut album breaded crickets. Reminiscent of Appalachian and Irish Folk, Sohotra’s ethereal voice is carried by a diverse array of instruments, including harmonium, bouzouki and double bass from multi-instrumentalist Martin Leahy.
‘Mountain Song’ stands out among Sohotra’s other tracks on breaded crickets for its melody in a harmonic minor scale, reminiscent of Middle Eastern music. The genres all blend together seamlessly into a lighthearted love story.
The vibrant stop-motion music video perfectly complements the track’s whimsical mysticism. The concept was conceived late last year, but the experience of lockdown proved to be the perfect catalyst for visual artist Bianca Stone to experiment with the medium in the isolation of her own home.
”It was what I had envisioned for the song from very early on,” Stone explains. “The animation stands apart from my previous videos while also tying in with a handmade aesthetic that I really enjoy.”
Sohotra loved the caricatures of the realism of life Stone captured with the visual.

“For a love song that bears a strong message but is also light enough that it verges on pop, I was looking forward to creating something whimsical and Bianca nailed that. I love working with her. I really enjoy collaborating with artists who see and understand my sense of humour and desire to talk about all the heavy things with a conscious sense of how ridiculous and random, realistic depictions of life can be.”
