Only three weeks after the town of Nenagh celebrated the official opening of the Shane MacGowan mural, his friends reunited again in his name for a special evening in tribute at the Spiegeltent, Wexford, dedicated to the famous Irish singer. Renowned musician Sharon Shannon, with her Big Band, led the way and was accompanied by an illustrious lineup of special guests, including Imelda May, Liam Ó Maonlaí, Camille O’ Sullivan, and Mundy.
Sharon shared in the show preview notes, “I miss Shane dearly and I’m truly honored to have been friends with him, to have played and toured with him. Sadly, we lost Shane but with full blessings from Shane’s sister Siobhán and his widow Victoria, we put this special tribute together. Waving coming on stage Sharon began the night with the 'Neck Belly Reels selection' and then what followed can only be described as a TWO-HOUR encore with her friends Imelda May, Liam Ó Maonlaí, Camille O’Sullivan, and Mundy immediately joining her on stage for 'Dirty Old Town' and 'Irish Rover'. The packed crowd was fully emersed by now and the celebration continued with Liam Ó Maonlaí's rendition of 'Summer In Siam', Mundy followed with 'Pair of Brown Eyes'. Imelda's first solo of the night was 'Streams of Whiskey'. Then Mundy was back on stage with 'I'm a Man You Don't Meet'. Shanon and the band were back centre stage and I think the Spiegeltent began to rock from its foundations for one of Ireland's favorite tunes, 'Blackbird'. There was no stopping or interval between songs, when one finished the mic was passed over the music just switched. Camile was back next with 'Broad Majestic Shannon', and Liam with a poignant version of 'Lullaby of London'. Camille rounded off this collection of guest solos with 'Dark Streets of London'. Sharon's tune 'Pothholes' was next from the renowned accordionist. Mundy returned to the stage singing 'The Sickbed of Cuchulainn' and was joined by Camile for 'Haunted'. On one of the most touching parts of the night, Imelda May brought a stillness to the venue with 'Rainy Night in Soho'. This quietness was quickly banished as this was a night to remember and celebrate Shane in all his glory. Sharon and the band continued with the uprising 'The Mouth of the Tobique'. And in a grand finale, everyone including the support act Dave Lofts filled the stage for 'Galway Girl', 'Sally Mac Lenanne', 'Fairytale Of New York', and 'FIESTA'!
