You've never heard the Mullingar outfit sound like this before!
Hot Press is delighted to bring you this first listen to and look at 'Several Perceptions', the first taster from Cronin's A View From The Next Room album, which follows on July 3 and lives up to its billing as "the band's most experimental and diverse set of songs to date." Give yourself a Nobel Laureate if you spotted that the album title is a reference to the Henry Scott Holland poem, 'Death Is Nothing At All Song'. We're hearing PiL, early Simple Minds, Joy Division and lots and lots of funk.
Co-produced by Mick Cronin with Karl Odlum (The Frames, Glen Hansard) and Ger McDonnell (U2, Manic Street Preachers), it features guest appearances from Waterboys violinist Steve Wickham, Damien Rice cellist Vyvienne Long and Terry Edwards who's played with PJ Harvey and Gallon Drunk.
"Some of these mixes have been about for some time and others are relatively fresh," Mick Cronin reflects. "With us unable to work in the studio we thought now would be a good time to release these as a mini album. It's a diverse mix compared to our releases so far, it shows another side of what we have in our heads."
The single cover is the work of Paul Gallagher, Noel and Liam's bro, who also took the fantastic shot of Gerry Cinnamon that currently adorns the Special Double Cover Issue of Hot Press.
