Same-Sex Couples Rush to the Altar
On Monday, May 17 at midnight, Massachusetts became the first US state to allow same-sex couples to legally wed. Around 5,000 people showed up to witness the historic event and more than 1,000 same-sex couple sought applications for marriage licences on the first day. The state’s high court ruled last year that the rights of same-sex couples are protected under the state’s constitution.

Mixed Reaction to 9 Songs
9 Songs, the most sexually explicit film in the history of British cinema was premiered at the Cannes Film festival on May 17. The film, directed by Michael Winterbottom (24 Hour Party People), consists almost entirely of real sex, including oral sex. Defending the film, Winterbottom says that part of his purpose was to say ‘What’s wrong with sex?’ and to explore an intimate relationship through its sexual nature. Reaction has been mixed, with reviewers either praising the film, labelling it offensive or even unerotic. There is a good chance that 9 Songs will receive an 18 certificate in Britain – no doubt we’ll get to see it here and judge for ourselves.
