(12/100 Greatest Irish Albums)
Live In Europe came after only two solo albums, and – eschewing all showbiz stage trickery – captures him in full flight on his first gold record.
Despite a magnificent body of studio work, the best way to experience Rory Gallagher is where he was happiest, playing to a real live audience. Live In Europe came after only two solo albums, and – eschewing all showbiz stage trickery – captures him in full flight on his first gold record. The set contains all the early Gallagher gems, from ‘Going To My Hometown’, through ‘I Could’ve Had Religion’ to ‘Laundromat’, ‘Messin’ With The Kid’, ‘Pistol Slapper Blues’ and ‘Bullfrog Blues.’
Bob Dylan was particularly attracted to his take on ‘I Could’ve Had Religion’, a shot of Chicago blues given the full electric treatment through Gallagher’s well-worn Strat and wailing harmonica. A superb guitarmeister and electrifying live performer, Rory was a major influence on the next generation of musicians, including a young Dave Evans.
