My My's excellent debut owes its inspiration to cities all over the world.
There might be three people in My My in total, but this excellent debut is all about studio man Lee Jones (the other two, Germans Nick Hopper and Carsten Kleman contribute to three tracks and live/DJ roadshow). The record might have been made in Berlin, but it owes as much to the depth of New York, the robo-soul of Chicago and the anything-goes of London as it does to German minimalism. Jones is a proper talent – here, he favours intricate polyrhythmic percussion and carefully considered off-kilter FX, pads, clicks and cuts, contrasting these with deep chord washes, pure house stabs and ambient touches. But instead of coming across like a deep-meets-minimal hatchet job, Jones manages to create something that feels both familiar and unique. No mean feat.
