Transformer
Transformer (1972) is both an essential Lou Reed album and an essential New York City album, though as you'd expect Reed's concerns reside closer to the Bowery than Broadway. Joined on this album by such luminaries as David Bowie and Mick Ronson the result was an at times cacophonic combination of cabaret, punk and glam-rock guitars and Reed's high-camp yet low key vocal. You've already heard 'Perfect Day' and 'Walk on the Wild Side' but 'Vicious', 'Make Up' and 'Goodnight Ladies' all guarantee a treat. And it's even got a great cover.
